This section describes general procedures for using SMS features from the test set's front panel.

Mobile Terminated Point-to-Point Message Transfer

The following procedures,

can be used to simulate exchanging SMS messages between the test set and the mobile station attached to the test set's RF port.

Procedure A: Sending a Text Message to the Mobile Station

  1. If you would like a log of the protocol messages exchanged between the test set and the mobile station, set up the Wireless Protocol Advisor (WPA) and start logging. See Logging SMS Messages .
  2. Connect the mobile station to the test set and power it on.
  3. After the mobile station has camped (and attached if it supports GPRS), go to the Call Setup screen by pressing the Call Setup key.
  4. Go to menu ( 2 of 3 ) of the Call Control menu by pressing the More key on the lower left corner of the test set.

  11. If you are capturing a log, stop logging.

Procedure B: Sending a WAP Push Message to the Mobile Station

  1. If the Pt to Pt SMS control screen is not visible on the test set's front panel, use steps 1 thru 6 of Procedure A: Sending a Text Message to the Mobile Station .
  2. Select Mobile Terminated by pressing the softkey F2 .The Mobile Terminated SMS menu appears.
  3. Choose the message to send by selecting the Content parameter. Select Custom Data . Configuring the content of your custom data requires a GPIB commands. See Defining the User Data (TP-UD) content for Binary SMS Applications for information on configuring custom data.
  4. Select the Data Coding Scheme parameter and use the test set's keypad to enter 245 . This entry indicates that this message is a WAP Push message.
  5. Select the User Data Header Indicator parameter. Select 1 . This indicates that this message has a User Data Header.
  6. Press the Send Message softkey ( F1 ) to send the message. Observe the mobile station for indications that the message has been received. The test set display also gives an indication.
  7. If you are capturing a log, stop logging.

Mobile Originated Point-to-Point Message Transfer

  4. Go to the second page of the Call Control menu by pressing the More key on the lower left corner of the test set.

  9. Observe the test set for indications that the message has been received. If the loopback option is enabled, observe the mobile station for indications that the message has been received.
  10. If you are capturing a log, stop logging.

Cell Broadcast Message Transfer

This section assumes that you have configured your mobile station to receive cell broadcast messages. This is done by enabling reception of messages in your mobile station and specifying the message parameters that it can receive.

  1. If you would like a log of the protocol messages exchanged between the test set and the mobile station, set up the Wireless Protocol Advisor (WPA) and start logging. See Logging SMS Messages .
  2. Connect the mobile station to the test set and power it on.

    NOTE

The mobile station does not have to attach.

The Cell Broadcast supported by the test set is GSM only. GSM Cell Broadcast does not work for some mobile stations if they are attached. You may prevent the mobile station from attaching by disabling the auto attach feature in your mobile station and only attaching when needed. Typically this setting is found under GPRS Settings on you mobile station. Alternatively, you can change the Operating Mode ( F1 ) to Active Cell (GSM) .

  3. Go to the Call Setup screen by pressing the CALL SETUP key.
  4. Go to the second page of the Call Control menu by pressing the More key on the lower left corner of the test set.
  5. Select Short Message Service by pressing the softkey F5 .
  6. Select Cell Broadcast by pressing the softkey F2 . The Broadcast SMS menu appears. You can select setup menus for three different messages, as well as the general cell broadcast setup.

  8. See Cell Broadcast Message Setup for more information about each parameter in the message setup.
  9. Set parameters according to the type of cell broadcast messages your mobile station is allowed to receive.
  10. To set the cell broadcast parameters that apply to all three messages, press Cell Broadcast Setup ( F5 ). The following menu appears:

  11. Use the knob to change the Repetition Period , if desired.
  12. Start the broadcast message using the Start Cell Broadcast softkey ( F1 ). NOTE: Cell Broadcast can not be activated if the SDCCH Subchannel is set to 2.
  13. Observe the display on the mobile station to confirm that the message(s) were received.
  14. If required, stop the broadcast by pressing the Stop Cell Broadcast softkey ( F1 ).
  15. If you are capturing a log, stop logging.

Cell Broadcast Updated Message Transfer

This section assumes that you have configured your mobile station to receive cell broadcast messages. This is done by enabling reception of messages in your mobile station and specifying the message parameters that it can receive. In order for a phone to realize the contents of a message have been altered you also need to change either the Message Code or Update Number for the message.

To enable a message to be sent, select Message Setup for the message you wish to send (message 1, 2, and/or 3) and set State to On . You can configure different message parameters in each of the Message Setup menus.
  8. Select the message to be sent using the Content menu for each message you want to update.

The Custom Text and Custom Data strings are defined using the commands CALL:SMService:CBRoadcast:MESSage[<n>]:CTEXt and CALL:SMService:CBRoadcast:MESSage[<n>]:CDATa , respectively.

  9. Start the broadcast message using the Start Cell Broadcast softkey ( F1 ).
  10. Observe the display on the mobile station to confirm that the updated message(s) were received.
  11. Select Message Setup for each message to be sent as an update.
  12. Set the Update Number for these messages higher than their previous value. The update number wraps from 15 to 0.
  13. Observe the display on the mobile station to confirm that the updated message(s) have replaced the first versions.

    NOTE
The amount of time the mobile station takes to display changes to the message(s) while the cell broadcast service is running depends on the repetition period parameter

    .
