 Known Issues

The test set incorrectly assigns itself two IP addresses based on the "LAN IP Address" setting in the test set - the IP address specified by the "LAN IP Address" setting and "LAN IP Address" + 1. Thus, the test set will respond to IP traffic directed to "LAN IP Address" and "LAN IP Address + 1". This may result in unexpected network behavior if another device on the network is also assigned to "LAN IP Address" + 1.

 Example:

If you set LAN IP Address = 192.168.1.22, the Test Set will also respond to LAN IP Address = 192.168.1.23. This will result in unexpected network behavior if there is another device on your network set to LAN IP Address = 192.168.1.23.

 Workaround:

Reserve both "LAN IP Address" and "LAN IP Address" + 1 for use by your test set:

  • Ensure that no other device on the network is assigned "LAN IP Address" + 1, including other test sets.
  •  Ensure that the test set's other IP addresses, such as "DUT IP Address" and "LAN IP Address 2" are not set to "LAN IP Address" + 1.

  •  Digital Audio Interface- Allows you to perform the bit exact test of the speech coder/decoder through Digital Audio Interface of the mobile station. See Digital Audio Interface (DAI) Description for more information
  •  Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR-WB) - AMR-WB provides excellent speech quality due to wider speech bandwidth. The mobile station can change AMR-WB parameters using the RATSCCH. The test set can support three bit rates (6.6, 8.85 and 12.65 kbit/s) of the AMR-WB on GMSK traffic channel currently. See Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR-WB) Feature Descriptions for more information.
  •  The UMA/GAN (Unlicensed Mobile Access / Generic Access Network) test system- Allows you to perform lab based functional, application, and pre-conformance testing of dual mode enabled UMA/GAN handsets. See UMA/GAN Test System for more information.

The UMA/GAN test system is built around the test set's existing capabilities to provide GERAN cell and Core Network emulation. To aid in simulation of the GAN "cell" in the system, Keysight provide proprietary test focused GAN Controller (GANC) emulation software (with a product number of E6962A) for use with the system. This software is capable of communicating with a connected MS using the standardized GAN Up interface protocols, namely GA-RC, GA-CSR, and GA-PSR. The Keysight GANC also connects the test set in the UMA/GAN test system to make use of the test set's core network capabilities via modified BSSAP & BSSGP protocols. The combination of these interfaces (Up interface protocols and BSSAP & BSSGP protocols) at the GANC allows a connected MS to fully make use of the GANC for accessing the test set's core network to perform GAN based speech, data and signaling procedures.

Note that you must have the E6962A GAN Controller to build the UMA/GAN test system. Contact your Keysight Sales Representative for more information.

You can perform the following tests with the UMA/GAN test system.

    • GAN discovery and registration procedures
    •  MO and MT voice calls via GAN

      • Support for configurable AMR FR/HR & GSM FR/HR/EFR channel modes.

This software release adds the following features:

Configuration

  • Enhancements to the Two Cell Test System feature (available in the E.00.05 pre-release)- Additional configurable parameters have been added. This includes the addition of the PBCCH BA Table that allows you to configure neighbour cells to be reported by the mobile station (see Configuring the PBCCH BA Table ). Many of the Control Parameters found in 3GPP TS 05.08 section 9 are now available.

Call Processing

  • Access Burst Type for Packet Control Acknowledgments - The test set allows you to configure the control acknowledgment type as an RLC/MAC control block or as a set of four Access Bursts.
  •  Calls via the SDCCH - The test set now allows call setup signalling to take place on either the FACCH or the SDCCH.
  •  Combined and Non-Combined BCH/SDCCH - The test set now supports the 3GPP TS 05.02 section 6.4 channel combination iv+vii to provide a combination where the BCH and the SDCCH exist on separate physical channels.
  •  In addition to the Delayed Downlink TBF and Extended Uplink TBF enhancements offered in the E.00.05 pre-release- You can now configure whether the test set allows the re-establishment of an uplink TBF before the current TBF is released, see TBF Re-establishment . These features allow you to optimize the performance of the data link for real-time traffic uses such as Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC).
  •  You can now set the DNS Server IP Addresses (primary and secondary).
  •  Additional Measurement Reports (from the mobile station) can now be viewed on the test set's front panel. There are now four separate Measurement Report screens, these include: Summary Measurement Reports, SACCH Measurement Reports (the Rx Level and RX Qual now report Full and Sub values; Neighbour Cell Reports are shown on this screen), PACCH Measurement Reports, and Network Control Measurement Reports (Neighbour Cell Reports are shown on this screen).

  • A non-recoverable error occurs when the PBCCH is switched on and the power is reduced in one downlink on a connection using multiple downlinks.
  •  A non-recoverable error occurs after staring the BFI measurement when the channel mode is set to HR speech.
  •  The GSM Bad Frame Indication measurement incorrectly includes SID frames in the number of frames sampled when calculating the undetected bad frames ratio result.
  •  The GSM Bad Frame Indication measurement incorrectly includes SID frames in the number of frames sampled measurement result.
  •  Incorrect values are returned for the Neighbour Cell Report ARFCN.
  •  Test set crashes when the INIT:BLER:ON or INIT:BLER:OFF commands are sent.
  •  BLER measurement does not work with some phones in ETSI Type B (Ack) mode.

When in ETSI B acknowledged mode there are two methods of BLER measurement available. These are loopback and ack/nack. Prior to the A.03.32 release only the loopback method was available in this test mode. (The ack/nack method uses the information returned from the phone to compute the BLER, the loopback method relies on the phone looping back the data and the test equipment making the measurement.)At A.03.32 the ack/nack method was added and the default changed to this method when in ETSI B acknowledged mode. (It offers advantages over the loopback method since the BLER associated with individual downlink timeslots can be observed in a single measurement.)This has been shown to cause problems with some phones that don't implement ETSI test mode B ack mode properly. To maintain backward compatibility the default measurement method has been changed to loopback for this and all later releases. The user may select the alternative measurement method if desired through the BLER measurement settings menu.

  •  Test set indicates Connected status before a connection is fully established.

When setting up a GSM voice call the instrument would indicate that the connection was established before it actually was. In this case attempting to make a BER measurement immediately could result in a measurement timeout.

  •  Changing channel mode from HR to FR using Handover Setup causes the call to drop.
  •  If the BER measurement is on during a change to another Operating Mode, the measurement stops working.
  •  Downlink Power in Unused Bursts for GPRS data connections is affected by changes to the GSM PRL.
  •  TCH and PDTCH PRL settings are coupled and should not be.
  •  GPIB Command for the RLC/MAC Expected Header displayed on the front panel when in Help mode is incorrect.
  •  Command SET:PVT:TXP:METHOD displayed on the front panel when in Help mode for setting the PVT measurement TX Power Method is not a valid command.
  •  When the BLER measurement is restarted, the Sum of Burst Blocks Tested is not equal to the Total Number of Bursts Tested.
  •  Performing a full preset does not clear the BLER Poll Rate value.
  •  User's Guide incorrectly states that the BER measurement can be used with a GSM HR connection.
  •  The test set is setting the change mark field in packet information messages on the PBCCH and PACCH to different values, causing mobile stations to repeatedly access the packet system information messages unnecessarily.

  • Web-based Protocol Logging Replaced by Wireless Protocol Advisor Software
  •  New: Short Message Service (SMS)
  •  New: Protocol Event Trigger Output (PETO)
  •  New: PBCCH capability
  •  New: Continuous Timing Advance
  •  New: Fixed Allocation
  •  New: USF BLER
  •  New: Mobile Station Measurement Reports
  •  New: Enhanced Stack Configurations

Protocol Logging

The previous protocol logging system has been replaced by the Wireless Protocol Advisor software, E6581A. This software expands the features available in protocol logging.

Log GPRS protocol messages using the GPRS Wireless Protocol Advisor software (included with the protocol application). Allows real-time logging of inter-layer and peer-to-peer messages. Includes powerful triggering, filtering, and search capabilities of logs, and decode view for viewing individual bit fields with appropriate labeling for each message.

Short Message Service

Short messages can be sent to and from the DUT. This allows emulation of live GPRS point-to-point SMS (a short message is sent from one MS to another MS via the network), as well as cell broadcast SMS functionality. The cell broadcast SMS service allows short messages to be sent to every MS currently in a particular cell. Cell broadcast messages are repeated at intervals over a period of time, which allows an MS to receive the message even if entering the cell after the first transmission.

Protocol Event Trigger Output

This feature provides a hardware trigger output from the rear panel of the test to control external instruments and devices. It is an extension of the trigger provided in earlier applications. Various frame triggers and protocol message-based triggers are available, based on the downlink in multiple layers of the protocol stack.

The original trigger could be set to trigger on every TDMA frame with user-settable timeslot and symbol positions. PETO offers additionally:

  • Several more frame triggers with varying degrees of frequency
  •  Protocol message based triggers on specific downlink messages sent by the test set

PBCCH

Packet Broadcast Control Channel (PBCCH) is a channel which is used when the test set is in Active Cell mode. When a PBCCH is present, the DUT will perform all requests for GPRS services via this channel.

Continuous Timing Advance

Continuous Timing Advance is an alternate method to the previously available Timing Advance assignment method. This is available in the RLC/MAC layer of the Protocol Control Menu. Now the DUT is given parameters to look in a given timeslot for its timing advance value.

Fixed Allocation

Fixed allocation provides more control over transferring data between the test set and the DUT. It provides the DUT with an allocation of uplink blocks which satisfies the number of octets that the DUT believes is necessary to transfer all of its data.

USF BLER

USF BLER is a measurement report viewed on the Call Setup screen. It is an indication of the number of PDTCH blocks incorrectly decoded (USF bits only) by the MS receive path.

GPRS Infrequent Network Events

 - accept/reject options for key requests:

  • Attach Accept
  •  Attach Reject (with cause)
  •  Detach Request (Mobile Terminated)
  •  Identity Request
  •  Activate PDP Context Accept
  •  Activate PDP Context Reject

Mobile Station Measurement Reports

Measurement Reports display measurements from the DUT regarding the quality of the downlink channel. The following channel parameters have data provided:

  • C Value
  •  RX Quality
  •  Signal Variance
  •  Interference Levels

Enhanced Stack Configuration

Several elements of the protocol stack can now be controlled. See Protocol Control for instructions to use the menu.

Six controllable protocol events are listed below. These features are evaluated according to the GSM 04.08 standard.

  • Attach Accept
  •  Attach Reject (with cause)
  •  Detach Request (Mobile Terminated)
  •  Identity Request
  •  Activate PDP Context Accept
  •  Activate PDP Context Reject

 A.01.10 Release (E6701A) - November 2001

The reference guide for this release is available at the following web location. Note This is a 15 MB .pdf file.

 http://cp.literature.keysight.com/litweb/pdf/1000-1750.pdf

These are the original features of the E6701A.

The E6701A GPRS Lab Application is a firmware which enables the E5515C Keysight Technologies 8960 Series wireless communications test set to:

  • Log GPRS protocol
  •  Use the test set as a data channel for transferring IP datagrams
  •  Provide parameter enhancements compared to the E1964 Mobile Test Application

Features

Contains all functionality of the E1964 GPRS Mobile Test Application, A.02 release.

Protocol Logging Features

Logs GPRS Protocol at the following layers:

Provides Setup, Start and Stop of Protocol Logging from the front panel, Remote User Interface, and the test set's new Web User Interface. Multiple browser windows can be opened to one test set display, allowing users to share log data and control of logging at multiple locations.

Allows setup of logging to control any or all of seven observation points, corresponding to the logged layers listed above. Allows a user-defined log header. Allows choice between a cyclic or linear buffer, giving the opportunity to write over existing logged data or to stop when the buffer is full.

Displays log results in a web browser, currently supporting Internet Explorer 5.01.

Applicable Standards

Multiple standards apply to this Lab Application. The most relevant are listed here:

  • GPRS 04.60 v. 7.3.1
  •  GSM 04.08 v. 7.6.1
  •  GSM 04.64 v. 7.3.0

Data Channel

Data Channel allows the test set to be used as a router for transferring IP datagrams between the DUT and anywhere on the network that the test set is connected to.

Includes the ability to set an IP address for the DUT, ping the DUT or any alternate address, control ping setup, and log protocol while using the data channel. All test set measurements except BER are available while using the data channel.

Data Channel is available through the front panel and the Remote User Interface.

Parameter Enhancements

Parameter Enhancements offer extended capability over the E1964 GPRS Mobile Test Application.

Parameter enhancements are available through the front panel and the Remote User Interface.

Parameters that are now variable are:

 Other controllable features are:

  • Timing Advance. Timing advance values can now be sent to the DUT, enabling simulation of propagation delays by telling the DUT how much it should offset its transmissions. Actual value is band-dependent.
  •  Uplink State Flag. The USF value is sent to the DUT in an immediate assignment message. The DUT can be instructed to transmit on the block corresponding to the new USF.
