Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) Troubleshooting

Description

The Wireless Protocol Advisor (WPA) attempts to decode any messages as text when the Data Coding Scheme value is set to a value that corresponds to text. If the content of the CBS message being transmitted is data (not text), the WPA still attempts to decode the message as text which will not be accurate. You must ensure that Data Coding Scheme is set to an appropriate value.

In case CBS is not received by the UE due to certain broadcast messages confliction with the UE specific paging occasions (see detailed descriptions in 3GPP TS 25.304 section 6.2), use the following steps to ensure a successful reception:

  1. Configure the UE to receive CBS messages on channel 0
  2. Turn off the UE and remove the battery. This step is to help the UE out of an unknown and no-response state.
  3. Full preset the test set, and configure the cell parameters as below ( CALL SETUP -> Call Control 2 of 6 -> Cell info ( F2 )\ Cell Parameters ( F2 )). This is to ensure that the UE's paging occasions do not conflict with the CTCH allocation used for CBS message transfer.
    • DRX Cycle Length (CN Domain) to 512 frames
    • DRX Cycle Length (UTRAN) to 512 frames
    • CTCH Allocation Period to 20 frames
  4. Set the cell broadcast Repetition Period to 5 s ( CALL SETUP -> Call Control 4 of 6 -> Short Message Service ( F6 )-> Cell Broadcast ( F2 )-> Cell Broadcast Setup ( F5 ))
  5. Start the Cell Broadcast by pressing the Start Cell Broadcast button
  6. Turn on the UE and wait
  7. The UE should receive the first CBS message within 30 seconds
