User Accounts and Passwords

When the PXB's power is switched on, it automatically logs into MS Windows using the default user name and password. This gives anyone full access to the system. The following steps can be taken to increase security of your instrument:

You can create as many user accounts as you like. The user name is not case sensitive. The password is case sensitive.

This account allows anyone to type in any name, without a password, and gain limited access to the PXB files. This account is created by Windows and cannot be deleted. It can be renamed. This account is turned off when the instrument is shipped.

How to Require Users to Logon when the Instrument Is Turned On

  1. Minimize the PXB user interface.

  2. On the Windows task bar, click Start, then click Run.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type Closedcontrol userpasswords2, then click OK

  4. In the ClosedUser Accounts dialog box that appears, check the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer check box. To turn this function off, perform the same procedure, but clear the check box. The account that is selected when the check box is cleared is the account that is automatically logged on when the instrument is turned on.

To restore the PXB user interface, click the PXB icon in the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

Add or Change User Accounts and Passwords

You can set up instrument users by name and grant various levels of access. This is particularly important when the PXB is remotely controlled or accessed over a LAN.

You can designate a person as the administrator and then configure the PXB to allow others to use it with reduced permissions. That is, other people can be signed on to use the instrument but they will not have the ability to perform all of the administrative functions that you can as the administrator.

Although allowed by Windows, do not allow an Administrator account without a password. Internet viruses look for and exploit this condition. See Antivirus Protection for your Instrument.
