How Do I Perform MEID Verification?

Last updated: June 20, 2006

In the Active Cell operating mode and IS-2000 system, the test set supports to test the MEID-equipped mobile stations (MS). This example is to verify that an MEID-equipped MS can:

Step A: Configure Call Parameters

  1. Press the Call Setup key.
  2. Verify that the Operating Mode ( F1 ) is set to Active Cell and the System Type ( F2 ) is set to IS-2000 .
  3. Set the parameters that are required for your MS to acquire the IS-2000 system. For example,
    • Set the Cell Band ( F8 ) on Call Parms 1 of 4 ) and Channel ( F9 on Call Parms 1 of 4 ) to match your MS's configuration for IS-2000 system.
    • Set the SID , NID as required for your MS from the Cell Parameters menu (see B. Cell Parameters for detailed procedure).

Step B: Enable Test Set to Support MEID/Enhanced PLCM

  1. Press the left More key until you reach the Call Control 3 of 3 (in Test Application) or the Call Control 3 of 5 (in Lab Application).
  2. Select the MEID/Enhanced PLCM ( F3 ).
  3. Set the MEID Support ( F1 ) to On . This is to enable the test set to support MEID tests.
  4. Set the PLCM Type ( F2 ) to MEID Based .

Step C: Register the Mobile Station.

  1. If there is data shown on Mobile Station Information screen, clear these data by pressing the F5 ( Clear MS & Capability Info ) on Call Control 2 of 3 (in Test Application) or Call Control 2 of 5 (in Lab Application).
  2. Power on the MS and wait for it to perform a power-up registration.
  3. When a registration has completed, the registration data (including MEID related information) reported/retrieved from the MS will be displayed on the Mobile Reported Information screen. During registration, the MS sends a Registration Message with SCM bit 4 (MEID support indicator) set to 1 (indicating that it supports MEID). Then the test set sends a Status Request Message with RECORD_TYPE = '00100111' to request MEID value. Verify that the MS responds with Status Response Message with RECORD_TYPE = '00100111', and set MEID_LEN and MEID fields properly.

Step D: Establish a Call.

  1. If required, set the service option for the radio configuration (for example, SO2 for Radio Config (Fwd3, Rvs3) ) in which you'd like to bring up the call.
  2. Select Originate Call ( F3 ) on MEID/PLCM 2 of 2 or make a MS originated call (by entering a phone number and pressing SEND on the MS).
  3. Check for Connected in the Active Cell status area indicating a call is successfully established. The test set sends MEID Extended Channel Assignment Message with PLCM_TYPE set to '0100' (corresponding to MEID Based you've set during Step B). When the call is successfully established, it indicates that the MS can use the PLCM determined by the specified PLCM Type .

Step E: Perform an Implicit Handoff.

  1. Change the PLCM Type ( F2 ) you've set in Step B to a different value (for example, ESN Based ).
  2. Observe the Active Cell status area. You should see the status changes from Connected to Handoff to Connected . The test set sends MEID Extended Universal Handoff Direction Message with PLCM_TYPE set to '0000' (corresponding to ESN Based you've changed to). The call is maintained, which indicates that the MS can use the PLCM determined by the specified PLCM Type .

Step F: Disable the Test Set to Support MEID and Verify the MS Behavior.

  1. End the call.
  2. Change the MEID Support ( F1 ) to Off .This is to disable the test set to support MEID. You should see that PLCM Type ( F2 ) and Query MEID ( F3 ) become invalid.
  3. Clear the registration data on Mobile Station Information screen by pressing the F5 ( Clear MS & Capability Info ) on Call Control 2 of 3 (in Test Application) or Call Control 2 of 5 (in Lab Application).
  4. Wait for the MS making a timer-based registration or press the Register Mobile ( F6 ) on Call Control 1 of 3 (in Test Application) or Call Control 1of 5 (in Lab Application) to force MS making a registration.
  5. When a registration has completed, you should see that no MEID value is displayed on the Mobile Reported Information screen although the MS reports that it supports MEID. This is because the test set does not send the Status Request Message to an MEID-equipped MS to retrieve its MEID value. Only pseudo-ESN is reported during MS registration. The MS sends a Registration Message with SCM bit 4 (MEID support indicator) set to 1 (indicating that it supports MEID), but no Status Request Message with RECORD_TYPE = '00100111' (MEID) is sent by the test set to retrieve MEID value.
  6. Establish a call and verify that a call is connected. This indicates that an MEID-equipped MS can establish a call with an MEID-disabled test set but use the PLCM derived from the pseudo-ESN instead of the specified PLCM Type. The test set sends Extended Channel Assignment Message (without any PLCM information included) during call establishment.

Step H: End the Test.

  1. If desired, end the call.
  2. Verify that the MEID Support ( F1 ) is set to Off if you plan to test an ESN-equipped MS. Otherwise, the call can not be established.
