Performing a Location Update (CS Domain Registration)

NOTE
The Call Limit State must be OFF for any random access procedure, such as Location Update or test set origination (Paging), to be successful.

Once the UE has camped on a cell it decides whether or not it needs to register with the network. If the ATT (IMSI Attach) Flag State is Set , the UE will always register. If the ATT (IMSI Attach) Flag State is Not Set , then the UE will only register when it determines that it has camped on a new cell. The UE uses the Mobile Network Code (MNC) , Mobile Country Code (MCC) , and Local Area Code (LAC) broadcast by the cell to determine if the cell is new.

The UE registers by performing a Location Update Procedure (see Location Update (Registration) Procedure and 3GPP TS 24.008 s4.4.1). MM Status indicates whether the UE has registered, and what type of registration was last performed.

You can control how often the UE performs the periodic location update procedure using the T3212 Periodic Location Update Timer .

During registration the UE informs the network of its identity. The UE's identity consists of its IMSI and IMEI . The UE can then be paged using its IMSI (see Test Set-Originated Connection ).

The UE can also be paged using a TMSI if one has been assigned to it during the Location Update (Registration) Procedure . If you set TMSI Assignment to On , the test set assigns the UE a TMSI in the Location Updating Accept message. If you do not plan to page the UE using a TMSI, it is recommended that you leave TMSI Assignment set to Off so that the Location Update procedure executes as quickly as possible (if TMSI Assignment is On , the UE must send a TMSI Reallocation Complete message).

You can specify whether or not to perform security operations during UE registration. See Security Information .

When registration has completed, the UE Information window displays the registration data received from the UE, such as its power class, IMSI, and IMEI.

You can specify whether the UE can also register in the PS domain ( GPRS Attach ) using the PS Domain Information setting.
