Known Problems Corrected in this Release

See Known Issues for information on issues in specific firmware releases and for workarounds. Known problems that existed in early versions of firmware that no longer exist in the A.03.48 release are listed below.

  • Incorrect values are returned for the Neighbor Cell Report ARFCN.
  •  SRB Loopback Connection does not work properly.
  •  Test set crashes when the INIT:BLER:ON or INIT:BLER:OFF commands are sent.
  •  BLER measurement does not work with some phones in ETSI Type B (Ack) mode.

    • When in ETSI B acknowledged mode there are two methods of BLER measurement available. These are loopback and ack/nack. Prior to the A.03.32 release only the loopback method was available in this test mode. (The ack/nack method uses the information returned from the phone to compute the BLER, the loopback method relies on the phone looping back the data and the test equipment making the measurement.)At A.03.32 the ack/nack method was added and the default changed to this method when in ETSI B acknowledged mode. (It offers advantages over the loopback method since the BLER associated with individual downlink timeslots can be observed in a single measurement.)This has been shown to cause problems with some phones that don't implement ETSI test mode B ack mode properly. To maintain backward compatibility the default measurement method has been changed to loopback for this and all later releases. The user may select the alternative measurement method if desired through the BLER measurement settings menu.
  •  Test set indicates Connected status before a connection is fully established.

    • When setting up a GSM voice call the instrument would indicate that the connection was established before it actually was. In this case attempting to make a BER measurement immediately could result in a measurement timeout.
  •  Connections made using the ETSI Type A and ETSI Type B (Ack) connection type are unreliable.

    • The previous release only demodulated signaling bursts known to contain useful information for both GPRS and EGPRS connections. Some phones have problems when using this technique for ETSI Type A and ETSI Type B (Ack) connection types. The following changes:

      • When using the GPRS system type, all bursts are now demodulated.
      •  When using the EGPRS system type, for the ETSI Type B (Ack) connection type, all bursts are demodulated.
      •  For ETSI Type A and ETSI Type B (Unack), the default is still reduced demod. You can change the demodulation used to normal demod by changing the EGPRS Demod setting. You may see a decrease in measurement throughput using normal demodulation.
  •  Changing channel mode from HR to FR using Handover Setup causes the call to drop.
  •  If the BER measurement is on during a change to another Operating Mode, the measurement stops working.
  •  Downlink Power in Unused Bursts for GPRS data connections is affected by changes to the GSM PRL.
  •  TCH and PDTCH PRL settings are coupled and should not be.
  •  GPIB Command for the RLC/MAC Expected Header displayed on the front panel when in Help mode is incorrect.
  •  Command SET:PVT:TXP:METHOD displayed on the front panel when in Help mode for setting the PVT measurement TX Power Method is not a valid command.
  •  When the BLER measurement is restarted, the Sum of Burst Blocks Tested is not equal to the Total Number of Bursts Tested.
  •  Performing a full preset does not clear the BLER Poll Rate value.
  •  User's Guide incorrectly states that the BER measurement can be used with a GSM HR connection.
  •  Unexpected BLER measurement results when using ETSI Type B Connection Type and Modulation Coding Scheme settings of MCS-7, MCS-8, and MCS-9.
  •  The ETXP measurement incorrectly returns a Parameter Error measurement integrity when measuring RACH signals.
  •  During multislot uplink EGPRS transfers, the second burst of signaling information is corrupt.
  •  If the FBER measurement is setup and started while the operating mode is EGPRS Test Mode, changing the operating mode to Active Cell (EGPRS) causes a measurement timeout failure to occur.
  •  In EGPRS MCS5-9, the test set transmits incorrect USF values for USF values other than 0.

NOTE: To properly view the CHM Help File, you must save it to your desktop (rather than "Open" it from the Internet). For Windows XP, you must also then right-click on the file and select Properties>>Unblock.

This firmware release adds optional EGPRS capability to the E1968A. This includes EGPRS specific call processing, new EGPRS measurements (EGPRS Transmit Power and EGPRS Modulation Accuracy), as well as the enhancement of existing measurements to support GMSK and 8PSK EGPRS modulation and coding schemes.

Hardware Requirements

  • E5515C requires option H03/K03 to support the E1968A with an EGPRS TA license. Starting in February 2004, the E5515C ships with this option as standard hardware.
  •  Previous hardware requirements still apply.

Call Processing

  • EGPRS has been added as a selection for the serving cell parameter. See CALL[:CELL]:BCHannel:SCELl for more information.

    NOTE
There is currently no combined GPRS + EGPRS mode available. Therefore, a mobile station that supports GPRS but not EGPRS will not be able to attach when the serving cell is set to EGPRS. The GPRS serving cell setting should be used instead. See CALL[:CELL]:BCHannel:SCELl for more information.

  •  The operating modes EGPRS BCH and EGPRS BCH+PDTCH have been added. See EGPRS Test Mode Operation for more information.
  •  The front panel user interface has been enhanced to allow changes to the Serving Cell parameter without manually switching the cell off. To accomodate this, three new selections have been added to the Operating Mode menu. These are:

    • Active Cell (GSM) - GSM only BCH
    •  Active Cell (GPRS) - GSM + GPRS BCH
    •  Active Cell (EGPRS) - GSM + EGPRS BCH

In addition, the selection Active Cell is no longer available. See Active Cell Operating Mode for more information.

  •  The following call processing commands have been added which are specific to EGPRS:
  •  The following broadcast channel configuration options have been added:

    • The ability to set the MSC/SGSN Revision to "Release 98 or older" or "Release 99 onwards". For more details, refer to CALL[:CELL]:BCHannel:MSCRevision .
    •  The ability to indicate to the mobile station that the cell is DCS or PCS to account for the ARFCN numbers shared by the two bands. For more details, refer to CALL[:CELL]:BINDicator .

The reference guide for this release is available at the following web location. Note This is a 24.4 MB .pdf file.

 http://cp.literature.keysight.com/litweb/pdf/1000-1859.pdf

There is also a .chm format of the user's guide for this release available at:

 http://www.home.keysight.com/upload/cmc_upload/All/E1968A_A01_E6701C_C01_E6704A_Ref_Guide.chm

NOTE: To properly view the CHM Help File, you must save it to your desktop (rather than "Open" it from the Internet). For Windows XP, you must also then right-click on the file and select Properties>>Unblock.

This initial release combines the existing E1960A GSM Mobile Test Application version A.10.20 and the E1964A GPRS Mobile Test Application version A.04.20 into one GSM/GPRS Mobile Test Application (E1968A).

Hardware Requirements

  • E5515A does not support E1968A.

  • E5515B will support E1968A without a hardware upgrade under the following conditions:

    • Option 002 installed AND serial number is >= US40350362 or >= GB40470454, or
    •  the test set is already running E1985A Fast Switching with GSM and/or GPRS.

  • Instruments with Serial Numbers prior to US40350362 or GB40470454 (with option 002 installed) can be upgraded with upgrade product number E5515BU option 085 to be able to support the E1968A.

  • E5515C requires option 002 to support the E1968A.

E1968A Functionality/License Summary

The E1968A is an integrated GSM/GPRS TA which replaces the E1960A GSM TA and the E1964A GPRS TA. There is no need for the E1985A/B to enable fast switching between GSM and GPRS as was required with the old E1960A and E1964A test applications. The E1968A contains both GSM and GPRS components and allows access to both components without the need to perform an explicit format switch (providing each component is licensed). If the E1968A has a GSM license, GSM calls are supported; if a GPRS license is present, GPRS data connections are supported; if both licenses are present, there is access to all capabilities. An added benefit of the integrated GSM and GPRS in the E1968A GSM/GPRS Mobile Test Application is there is no loss of BCH when going from GSM to GPRS testing or vice-versa; this allows the mobile to stay camped/attached.

 Product Number/License summary:

  • E1968A, GSM/GPRS Mobile Test Application, shell product, no technologies enabled

  • E1968A-101 GSM Functionality, enables GSM

  • E1968A-102 GPRS Functionality, enables GPRS

  • E1968A-201 GSM and GPRS Functionality, enables both GSM and GPRS

Issues that can affect compatibility and test times changing from E1960A and/or E1964A to the E1968A

  • Hardware compatibility - see Hardware Requirements above

  •

Prior single-partition (E1960A and E1964A) and fast switching (E1985A/B) will not run on future test sets

  •

Technologies must be licensed within the E1968A to gain their functionality

  •

Compatibility of GPIB commands from E1960A/E1964A to E1968A is maintained where possible however, some GPIB changes were required as well as the added improvements to test features in the E1968A

  •

Overlapped commands in the E1968A are not equivalent to those in the E1960A/E1964A. In many E1968A commands they are no longer needed and will only slow the test run when running old overlapped GPIB command code on the E1968A. This has been improved in the E1968A by new commands/methods for channel reconfiguration which possibly produce a reduction in test times.

Advantages to integrating, qualifying and moving to the E1968A

  • All future GSM, GPRS and EGPRS (EDGE) test applications and lab applications will be based on this format. Follow-on versions of the E1968A will incorporate new features but the E1960A GSM and E1964A GPRS Mobile Test Applications will not be updated.

  •

The new GSM, GPRS and EGPRS (EDGE) format applications have a new firmware architecture that improves application performance.

  •

The new E1968A combined format provides the potential for a reduction in test times.

  •

The new E1968A combined format provides improvements to measurements and measurement features.

  •

Using the E1968A will not require a format switch for GSM, GPRS, and EGPRS (EDGE) testing because all of these formats are integrated in the E1968A.
